How this list was built
The ranking is the word count of FrequencyWords (OpenSubtitles 2018), a corpus of film and television subtitles, the closest large corpus there is to everyday spoken language. Every candidate word was checked against Wiktionary: tokens that are not English words (names, typos, foreign words, tokenizer fragments) were dropped, and each surviving word took its pronunciation, type, meaning and example from its dictionary entry. Conjugated verbs were folded into their infinitive, so a verb appears once, ranked by the count of all its forms together. Where Wiktionary had no usage example, the shortest translated sentence containing the word was taken from Tatoeba.
Frequency data: FrequencyWords (OpenSubtitles 2018), CC BY-SA 4.0. Definitions, transcriptions and examples: Wiktionary, CC BY-SA 4.0. Additional example sentences: Tatoeba, CC BY 2.0 FR. This list is published under CC BY-SA 4.0: copy it, print it, embed it, and link back to this page.
